But, wouldn't Tom have done a little research upon learning of the Elder Wand's existence? Sure, he wouldn't have known about the fairy tale as an 11 year old First Year, but he'd have certainly found out about it when researching the Elder Wand. I'd think the legends about it would have been the first thing he'd run into when he started looking up info.

Plus, wouldn't he have been just a tad curious about Grindelwald, and that symbol he used? He'd understand that symbols have meanings, and that this one represented something. He'd have wanted to find out what. Then, by an amazing coincidence, he just happens to come into possession of the Resurrection Stone, which just happens to have the symbol Grindelwald used even though it predates Grindelwald by several centuries.

I realize I'm putting much more thought into Tom than JKR ever did, but that's the lot of a fic writer. We have to put more thought into it than JKR. :)

But, I'm playing with the idea that he was after more than one thing during that fateful visit to Godric's Hollow. And, if it's actually canon compatible, he has more than one reason to have captured Luna.

I don't think Tom did know about the Hallows. He learned about the wand from Ollivander. Remember Ollivander knew about the Elder wand but had never heard of the Hallows. Ollivander sent Tom to Gregorovich. When Tom was at Gregorovich's he was able to see Gregorovich's memory of the man who stole the wand from him, which turned out to be Grindwald. But remember Tom only realized it was Grindwald when he found the picture that Harry dropped at Bathilda's house with Grindwald's name on it. Even DD thought that Tom only knew or cared about the wand. DD tells Harry that during the King's Crossing chapter.

Well, the entire idea of the Hallows was thought of as utterly ridiculous by most wizards. It was just a children's tale. So even if Voldemort had heard about it, I doubt he paid it any heed. He put his stock in something he thought he was sure of - the Horcruxes.

Oh well... It was just an idea to make Tom a bit less of a dumbass and flesh him out a bit. I figured an aspiring Dark Lord would have some curiosity about his immediate predecessor and what he did right and wrong, especially knowing he was going to have to face Grindelwald's vanquisher at some point. But, it seems Tom wasn't even paying attention to current events during his teen years, when he was planning all this stuff.

Yeah. Tom can be a little cardboard sometimes (though in general, I think Jo does an okay job of making him human). Especially in the last book. <_<

Maybe I should rephrase my question... Since Dumbledore is sometimes wrong, is it only his opinion that Tom never learned about the Hallows? Would it be canon compatible for Tom to have learned about them once he entered the wizarding world?

It's a strange thing to be harping on, I know, but how Tom learns of his family is a plot point in my series, since he inadvertently sets other events in motion that'll ultimately lead to the next great wizarding war, just after Harry has decided all was well.
